Public officials discuss Bancroft purchase behind closed doors.
News of the proposed public purchase of the Bancroft property on Kings Highway East has been hard to come by lately. After several well-attended, high-profile public meetings at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, the plan is now only discussed in closed session in public meetings, which means the public is shut out of the discussion. It happened again on Monday when the borough Board of Commissioners voted to go into a closed session to discuss Bancroft at the end of a nearly three-hour work session that was open to the public. The school board has used the same tactic, as well. Officials have said some negotiations need to be behind closed doors, such as discussions of personnel matters and the purchase of property. They…

The allocation is contingent on a private group raising half of the money for the $1 million project at Haddonfield Memorial High School.
The Haddonfield Board of Commissioners on Monday agreed to contribute $354,000 to a $1 million project to install artificial turf at two fields at Haddonfield Memorial High School. The money will be contingent on $500,000 in private funds raised by a community group for the project. The agreement came after a 20-minute presentation from Joe Del Duca, a local attorney leading the private fundraising effort, and a lively 30-minute debate with Del Duca, and among themselves, at a work session. The commissioners finally agreed to support a resolution at their next meeting on Tuesday, May 22. Commissioner Jeff Kasko expressed concern that approving a resolution then may not provide enough time for public comment. “I’m very nervous not to have …

Chuck Klaus moves on to the high school after one year at Central School.
A carousel of job swapping around the Haddonfield school district has some staff members worried. The board of education announced three promotions this week that have three veteran district educators changing jobs. Chuck Klaus will leave the Central Elementary School after one year as principal to become the new principal of Haddonfield Memorial High School. He replaces Mike Wilson, who will become an assistant superintendent. Shannon Simkiss, the current dean of students at the high school, will replace Klaus at Central. Board members said promoting within the district placed veteran staffers in new jobs. But a teacher at Central School expressed a concern that may resonate with Central School staff and parents. “Central has had four …

'South Jersey Magazine' ranked Haddonfield No. 1 last year.
South Jersey Magazine ranked Haddonfield as No. 2 in its annual Top Towns rankings this month. By all accounts that should be good news for this bucolic borough of quaint neighborhoods nestled amongst 10,000 trees, until you consider Haddonfield had been ranked No. 1 for as long as anyone can remember. This year, Haddonfield finished behind Medford, which was ranked No. 4 last year. "You can make an argument for Haddonfield being No. 1 every year," said Peter Proko, editor-in-chief of South Jersey Magazine. "This is a celebration of top towns in South Jersey and not a listing of worse towns." But despite Proko's caveat, there has already been some grumbling. He said he has spoken with several disgruntled South Jersey mayors about their …

The $15.23 million budget will boost property taxes.
The Haddonfield Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a $15.23 million budget that will increase the local tax rate by 7.47 percent. The budget will boost the average amount paid for local services by taxpayers to $2,304 yearly. That's a $134 hike for the owner of a home assessed at $491,359, the borough average. The tax hike is largely fueled by a nearly $500,000 increase in the reserve for uncollected taxes. The reserve is a state requirement. The budget will still keep Haddonfield under a state-mandated, 2-percent cap on increases to the amount raised by taxes, or the tax levy. The projected levy will be $10,576,000, up from $9,992,651. Commissioners are also approved the 2012 budget for the Partnership for Haddonfield, the borough…

Messrs. Kenny, Hess, Kelly, etc. you are all absolutely correct in your observations and comments. I am still trying to process the fact that the BOE negotiated this deal directly with Bancroft. How did that happen?! And, is it "legal"? As an east-ender, who has been described as living on the outskirts of Haddonfield, I have contended with the threat of over/inappropriate development of the …   more ›
