Letter to Editor: BYOB Helped Improve Collingswood

A former Collingswood resident describes the effect of BYOB on the town.

To the Editor: I've been asked to speak in favor of BYOB in Ocean City from my experience working in Collingswood during its renaissance. I am truly neutral on this issue for a few reasons: I can tell you what I observed in Collingswood that might help. First let me say that "Colls" is a town that works together on issues and tends to find creative ways to solve its problems. Mayor Malley was proud and satisfied with the results of the changes. They don't seem to have the control issues that exist in Ocean City. When I began working there, Haddon Avenue had deteriorating buildings, struggling and closing businesses. Simultaneously, the police experienced destruction and violence regularly on the part of the young people who were out in the…

Guide to Ocean City's BYOB Referendum

Everything you need to know about the May 8 municipal election.

It all began—in a 21st-century sorta way—with a Facebook page. It gathered steam when two restaurant owners (one now out of business) took the lead on starting a movement. They said they were inspired, in part, by a newspaper editorial (Jan. 19, 2011). And now, about 475 days and several thousand Ocean City Patch comments later, it will all come to an end on Tuesday: the Great BYOB Debate of 2011-12.  Voters go to the polls on Tuesday, May 8, to decide a binding public question on allowing "Bring Your Own Bottle" (BYOB) restaurants in Ocean City. Voters from each of the city's four wards will also pick representatives for City Council. Here's what you need to know:   WHERE TO VOTE AND FIND RESULTS   BYOB QUESTION

Whale Washes Ashore in Ocean City

The marine mammal is dead and decomposing at Seventh Street.

UPDATE, 2:25 p.m.: Officials from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center have confirmed that a whale that washed ashore earlier today on the Seventh Street beach is dead. "It's a very dead and badly decomposing whale that washed ashore" said Sheila Dean, co-director of the center in Brigantine.  The whale, roughly 40 feet long, is either of the minke or fin species, Dean said. It's impossible at this point to determine how or exactly when the whale died, she added. Curious onlookers should stay away from the dead marine mammal, as gases are building up inside its body, which could cause the carcass to explode, according to Dean. ______________________ A whale is stranded in the shallow surf next to the Seventh Street jetty at 1 p.m. on Monday…

Ocean City Pro Surfer Uses Ink to Memorialize Cousin Lost on 9/11

Kevin Richards' cousin, 26-year-old Bobby McIlvaine, was killed in the attack on the Twin Towers.

For 29-year-old pro surfer and Ocean City, New Jersey resident Kevin Richards, one word about Sept. 11, 2001, is forever etched in his memory. Bittersweet.  It began sweetly enough. That morning, Richards experienced some of the best surf coastal New Jersey has to offer. Sept. 11, 2001, remains, for area surfers, a day of greatness. But bitter crept in that afternoon, as Richards—who'd heard about the attacks, but didn't tie himself into the tragedy—arrived home to see his family sitting around the table, expressions of loss reflecting from face to face.  Richards' first cousin, 26-year-old Princeton University graduate Robert "Bobby" G. McIlvaine, was among the victims lost in 9/11. McIlvaine, a resident of Oreland, PA, did not work in …

Essential Take-Along for Days at the Shore

Jen A. Miller has updated her book on Jersey shore must-do's—and has a blog to check daily.

Even if you’ve been heading to the South Jersey shore since the Ocean City carousel was the high point of your visit, this time take along a copy of Jen A. Miller’s newest book: The Jersey Shore: Atlantic City to Cape May. As you page through it and look at the color photos—many of them vintage—you’ll say repeatedly: I didn’t know that! Miller, 30, a graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School who now lives in Collingswood, is the Coppertone model all grown up. Even when she’s wearing strappy sandals and a dress, you know she’d rather be sitting in a low chair with her feet in the surf. Miller stopped at the Haddonfield library Wednesday night, admittedly to hawk her $19.95 book. It was one of dozens of South Jersey book-signings she’s …
