Police: Man Gets $3,000 After Bank Mistake, Refuses to Reimburse

Bank error in your favor? Not this time, said police.

A Riverside man who refused to return money to a bank after the teller gave him too much was arrested on theft charges this week, according to police. Felipe S. DePaula, 27, of the unit block of Scott Street, went to Delanco Federal Savings Bank on Route 130 to cash a $300 check on May 16, Cinnaminson Police said. The bank teller accidentally gave DePaula $3,000 instead of $300. And police said he was caught on tape watching the teller count out the amount. But DePaula didn't ride high with the cash for long; the bank contacted him the next day to ask for the money back. DePaula said he lost the envelope. He was apprehended by Cinnaminson Police, processed and remanded to Burlington County Jail on $2,500 cash bail. This information comes …

Checking in with Amanda McGrory, U.S. Paralympian

McGrory is hoping to compete for gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer.

This article is sponsored by Citi. Amanda McGrory, of Kennett Square, PA, was just five years old when she was diagnosed with a rare disease called transverse myelitis that left her paralyzed from the waist down. But that didn't stop Amanda from becoming a speed demon and by age 10 she started racing with her wheelchair in the hope of becoming a Paralympian. Amanda has become one of the fastest wheelchair marathoners in the world. At the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, Amanda won the gold medal for the 5,000-meter race, a silver medal for the marathon, bronze for the 800-meter race and bronze for the women's 4x100 meter relay. She also won the 2011 New York City Marathon Women's Wheelchair race. The 25-year-old is now setting her sights on …

Proud Neighbors Porch Brunch and Garden Tour Sunday

Tickets are still available for the annual community-wide fundraiser.

For five years, Robb C. and Eric Sewell-Wolff lived in Burlington Township, in a home they loved, where they didn’t know a soul in the neighborhood. The couple, who loves to entertain, discovered that they were spending all their social time in Collingswood, anyway. When a friend informed them he was putting up his house on the corner of Highland and Browning avenues, they took one walk-through and were sold. “Even before we moved in, we met our neighbors and they all welcomed us, arms wide open,” says Eric Sewell-Wolff. “We love the town and we see so much possibility here.” The Sewell-Wolffs hope to impart that same feeling on their guests this Sunday, when they open their home to visitors of the Proud Neighbors of Collingswood Porch …

Wonder What's Happening with Bancroft Buy? So Do We

Public officials discuss Bancroft purchase behind closed doors.

News of the proposed public purchase of the Bancroft property on Kings Highway East has been hard to come by lately. After several well-attended, high-profile public meetings at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, the plan is now only discussed in closed session in public meetings, which means the public is shut out of the discussion. It happened again on Monday when the borough Board of Commissioners voted to go into a closed session to discuss Bancroft at the end of a nearly three-hour work session that was open to the public. The school board has used the same tactic, as well. Officials have said some negotiations need to be behind closed doors, such as discussions of personnel matters and the purchase of property. They…

Messrs. Kenny, Hess, Kelly, etc. you are all absolutely correct in your observations and comments. I am still trying to process the fact that the BOE negotiated this deal directly with Bancroft. How did that happen?! And, is it "legal"? As an east-ender, who has been described as living on the outskirts of Haddonfield, I have contended with the threat of over/inappropriate development of the …   more ›
